Important "Bambocci" Chest - Bergamo Manufacture, 17th Century A splendid example of Lombard cabinetmaking from the mid-17th century, this chest embodies the rigorous and monumental style typical of the Bergamo area. The piece is crafted from solid walnut of excellent quality, characterized by a warm, deep patina that attests to its age and integrity. Aesthetic Characteristics and Carving The front is a celebration of Northern Baroque, punctuated by rich yet balanced decoration: "Bambocci" Pilasters: The corners are embellished with imposing anthropomorphic figures (putti or "bambocci") carved in high relief from the solid wood, which act as lateral telamons resting on elegant scrolls. Moldings and Frames: The front panel is divided into three geometric sections, framed by a refined guilloche (braided) motif that runs along the entire upper and lower perimeter, enriched with original bronze studs. Supports: The cabinet rests on sturdy, stylized lion's paw feet (feet), which lend momentum to the imposing structure. Hardware and Interiors Handles and Escutcheons: There are wrought iron and bronze handles on the sides and front, cast with shell and female figure motifs, consistent with the period and style of the cabinet. Interior Compartment: The interior is in excellent condition, lined with a yellow damask fabric that protects the original wood.
