Chairish

$191

A vintage reproduction print of antique Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, from his series, "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Road". Thirty-First Station: Arai. In the title block: "The Ferry". In the center, the sailing boat of a Daimyo (feudal lord). Canvases decorated with lordly coats of arms are hoisted on the gunwales to hide and protect the passengers. The lord's private flag flutters in the wind. The large boat is followed by a ferry pushed by two boatmen. In the distance, we can see the rooftops of Arai where the shogunal police station responsible for checking passports is located. This reproduction print is not a woodblock reproduction, but offset, full-color print. Detailed. Comes from a rare art folio published by Editions du Credit Lyonnais in Paris, France, in 1960. Printed in France, on one side of high quality heavy paper. Blank back, numbered on the back: XXXII. Nearly excellent condition - minor edge wear, it was pinned in the past, two tiny holes very close to the top corners were smoothed, never framed.
