Chairish

$2,695

This moody and impressionistic piece is an original oil painting on canvas board by renowned 19th century American painter James Gale Tyler. The piece is signed in the lower left corner by the artist, and comes framed and ready-to-hang in a beautiful brass toned frame. The piece measures 12"h x 10"w (unframed) and 15"h x 12.5"w x 1"d including the frame. The painting depicts a ship at sea on a cloudy evening. We think that this special piece would make a striking addition to so many different settings, from a nautically inspired coastal home, to a cozy study. This painting is sure to be a talking point! About the Artist: James Gale Tyler (1855 -1931) was born in Oswego, New York and is one of America's most well known maritime painters. From an early age, Tyler was fascinated by ships and sea life. In his lifetime, Tyler would paint not only boats (of all variety!), but also seascapes, seamen, and other snippets from coastal life. In time, Tyler became known for his moody and impressionistic style of painting. Each year from 1900-1930 Tyler traveled to Newport, Rhode Island to paint the America's Cup Race. He also worked as an illustrator with clients each as Harper's and Century and LIterary Digest. Paintings by Tyler such as "Sales & Steam, 1888" and "Twenty miles to windward" have sold through Christie's Auction House for $21,250 and 85,875 GBP respectively.
