Alessandro Leone Varotari, detto il Padovanino (Padua, Italy, 1588 - Venice, Italy, 1649) Title: Pair of putti Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: without frame 83 × 66 cm – with frame 97.4 x 80.3 x 6.5 cm Not signed Alessandro Leone Varotari, commonly known as Il Padovanino was born in Padua, Italy and was an Italian painter of the late-Mannerism and early Baroque-Venetian school. He was trained by his own father, who was a local painter and architect. He was known as a copyist and his paintings were characterised for their sexuality. The painting depicts a pair of putti playing with each other on a meadow. One of the two is sitting on a red drape while the other is holding his hand. The scene takes place outdoors, above a meadow, while the two chubby infants play under a tree whose trunk can be seen in the background.
