A gentleman wearing a hunting hat and scarlet breeches stands with a hawk perched on his finger, a pack of dogs and captured game birds lie at his feet. A second man, wearing a cocked hat, holds the horses. Perfect accent piece for a hunting lodge or gift for a falconry enthusiast. The painting is signed on the lower left MB. We have seen etchings with the MB monogram of the same period, similar composition and style by M. Burman. According to Benezit and Francois Brulliot Dictionary of Monograms, M. Burman was a Dutch painter and etcher active in the late 1700's who died very young, circa 1800. He worked in the style of Johann Christian Klengel (German, 1751 - 1824), representing characters in the Dutch countryside. Examples of Burman's etchings signed MB are in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Measurements: Frame: 17 3/4" by 14 5/8"; mat opening: 8 1/2" by 6 5/8" approximately.
