By naming her work “Crusader Wall,” Berkeley, California painter Marjorie Cathcart (1918-2014) was sharing the location of her inspiration with posterity. However, there are at least two places known as Crusader Wall, both in the Mideast. One can be found in Caesarea, Israel, an ancient city on the shores of the Mediterranean. Originally built by no less of a politico than King Herod, who specifically named it to honor his Roman overlord, Augustus, the model town was initially furnished with every comfort, including a substantial stadium with public toilets, and, of course, a waterfront palace for the founder. The Crusaders came a thousand years afterward and built a fortress, and there's a spot now designated as the Crusader Wall amid the ruins. The other possibility, a location of the same name, exists in neighboring Jordan, referring to the Crusaders’ fort built atop a Roman fort, a structure which offers a similar opening in stone as this mixed media painting. The mystery goes with the artwork, no extra charge.
