Signed center left, 'S. Calpestri' for Shirley Calpestri (American, 1915-2002) and painted circa 1965; additionally signed, verso, on canvas with artist label. Shirley Calpestri first studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts and, subsequently, at the College of Alameda under Lundy Siegriest and Jade Fon. Calpestri was a member of the San Francisco Women Artists Guild and also a founding member of "The Pad", an art studio in Oakland, which provided work space and support to many local artists. Over the course of a long career, she exhibited widely and with success including at one-woman shows of her work at San Francisco's Lucien Labaudt Gallery, the American Institute of Architects, the Phillip/Allen Gallery, San Francisco and at St. Mary's College Art Gallery, Moraga, She was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards including from the Oakland Art Association, the Jack London Invitational, the Alameda County Fair among others.
