French master of the 18th century Bacchanal Oil on canvas, unframed cm. 24 x 30 - framed cm. 33.5 x 39 Antique shaped wood frame, lacquered in mustard color On the back old label attributing the work to François Lemoyne The scene presented here is that of a festive bacchanal in which a large satyr intent on feeding on grapes is lying on the ground surrounded by a large group of putti who with festoons and vines fill and populate the pictorial composition. The cool cerulean tones of the sky juxtaposed with the reddish pigments of the flesh tones recall the mythological compositions of Poussin to whom our master looks with careful admiration, citing his style and reinterpreting it in a more mature, late 18th-century taste proper. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no official proof of authenticity, however it is well documented in design history.
