Frisian Costumes of Makkum with Lace Cap and Redingote, 1932 : This finely detailed hand-colored lithograph is Plate V from the rare 1932 folio The National Costumes of Holland by Gratiane de Gardilanne and Elizabeth Whitney Moffatt, with descriptive notes by Alma Oakes. This limited edition, published in just 500 copies for commercial use, documented regional Dutch dress in vivid color and ethnographic detail. This plate illustrates traditional costume from Makkum in Friesland, dating to the second half of the eighteenth century. The woman on the left wears the elaborate headdress known as a Deutsche muts or German cap, a towering structure adopted in Friesland from German fashion as early as the 1730s. Her coiffure includes a padded rouleau of cotton-wool wrapped in black sateen, topped with a wide lace gold Frisian oorijzer, supporting the ornate lace cap. Her fichu is a draped embroidered white muslin scarf, and her jak or coatee is a blue silk jacket paired with a spectacular chintz skirt. The skirt’s pattern, influenced by Oriental and European designs, is rich in stylized florals and figures, reflecting the influence of East Indian trade on local textiles. She also wears black silk mittens, woven blue wool stockings, and black leather shoes adorned with silver buttons. Her ensemble is refined and ceremonial, reserved for the ladies of the district rather than the peasant class. The figure on the right wears a long, brown redingote, buttoned from neck to hem, made of sturdy cloth for protection against the Friesland cold. His scarf is of red and black Indian cotton, and his black beaver hat has a low crown and shallow upturned brim. Completing his look are knitted stockings and black shoes with large square silver buckles. A clay pipe in hand, likely from Gouda, reinforces the period accuracy of the scene. Technique and condition The print was created through chromolithography by Vincent, Brooks, Day & Son in London, one of the foremost color printing houses of the era. The image retains its original brilliance and clarity, with no damage or discoloration, making it an outstanding collector’s item or decorative piece. Framing tips A walnut or mahogany frame enhances the warm brown tones of the man’s coat and complements the vibrant colors in the skirt. Choose a neutral mat in ivory or pale grey to allow the rich patterns and intricate lacework to shine. For added elegance, a double mat with a muted red or blue inner edge can echo the garments.
