Sylvester Phelps Hodgdon (USA 1830-1906) Untitled (Boston Harbor) Etching Hodgdon was an American painter known for landscapes and sea scapes of the mountains and shores of New England. He was born on Christmas day, 1830 the son of a sea captain. He studied painting in Boston with Ben Champney and in New York City with Samuel Rouse. Hodgdon was a founding member of the Boston Art Club which held its first meeting in his studio at Tremont and Park Streets in downtown Boston. This etching was produced 1873-78. It depicts docked sailing boats and ships in, presumably, Boston harbor. Signed S.P. Hodgdon in the plate. The framer, L.A. Bigelow, was around the corner from Hodgdon's studio. Framed under glass in black wood moulding without mats. 11-3/4" x 9-1/2" Good antique condition. Some foxing. No apparent tears or other damage.
