Chairish

$585

Chinese landscape scroll, freely drawn colored inks on heavy paper, mounted on a nakamawashi of a shimmering gold and dark blue over olive floral silk brocade, with a shimmering ten and ji of a gold and light and dark copper floral silk brocade. The scroll is signed, with a signed short poem in Chinese caoshu script and with numerous red seal marks in various shapes and sizes scattered about the image. The image size is 25" wide x 50" high. The scroll has a corded makio and kakio at the top and natural hongmu jikusaki at the bottom. The outer scroll cover is done in a shimmering light and dark green over ecru silk brocade. There is an an official Chinese export document with an impressed wax seal affixed to the external cover and another copy without the seal affixed to the top left of the scroll. Circa early 20th century, no later than mid century. In the foreground is a large river estuary with bouldered shores, cliffs and promontories, forested with pines, trees, grasses and shrubs. The gentler shores at mid ground recede to cloud capped massifs dotted with forest and sparse habitat, which ascend into the heavens, fading into the distance in traditional Chinese aerial perspective.
