Late 19th-Century Barbizon-Style Pastoral Landscape By C B Robertson

Chairish

$1,325

On offer is a late-19th-century Barbizon-style pastoral landscape painting titled "Peace at Pasture," created and signed by the American artist C.B. Robertson in 1886. The artwork depicts an idyllic, quiet rural landscape featuring a small herd of cattle grazing near a calm body of water under a bright, cloud-dotted sky. A small, rustic cottage or barn sits subtly tucked into the tree line on the far right. The composition strongly reflects the influence of the French Barbizon school (and its American Tonalist counterparts), which popularized loose, visible brushwork, a moody palette of deep earth tones, tonal greens and a profound focus on the peaceful harmony between nature and animals. Robertson beautifully captured the play of filtered sunlight breaking through the heavy, organic shapes of the mature trees, casting long shadows across the grass. The serenity inspires one to just lay out a blanket and unpack a picnic. Signature: Lower-left corner "C.B. Robertson 86" (photo #8). Unframed dimensions: 9.75” high x 13.25” wide.
